Macular Surgery

The macula is a small area located in the center of the retina that is responsible for sharp and colorful vision. The area at its center, about the size of a pinhead, is referred to as the "yellow spot" due to the special pigment substances it contains. When we look straight ahead, light is focused on the macula with the help of the cornea and lens. Vision is sharper in the central retina and weaker towards the peripheral retina at the edges. In age-related macular degeneration, progressive vision loss occurs due to the destruction of photoreceptor cells in the macular region. Age-related macular degeneration is commonly known as "yellow spot disease."
